Head and neck surgery is the key clinical specialty in Jiangsu province. There are 48 beds in the department with 18 doctors, including 2 chief physicians, 6 deputy chief physicians, 2 associate professors and 2 tutors for master students. This department is one of the Standing Committee and Member Units of the Head and Neck Tumor and Thyroid Cancer Committee of the Chinese Anticancer Association and the Thyroid Professional Committee of the Surgeon Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, the Chairman of the Thyroid Cancer Professional Committee of the Jiangsu Anticancer Association, the Deputy Director of the Head and Neck Tumor Professional Committee, the vice-chairman of the professional committee of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery of the Jiangsu Medical Association , the member of the oncology Committee of Jiangsu Medical Association, the leading unit of head and neck oncology group, and the member of the maxillofacial plastic branch of Jiangsu Plastic and Cosmetic Association. 

Since its establishment, the Department has won 1 Jiangsu Science and Technology Progress Award and 7 New Technology Introduction Award. At present, the Department presides over and participates in 11 national and provincial research projects, including national key R&D, overseas cooperation and clinical key projects in Jiangsu Province. It has published nearly 50 papers, nearly 20 of which were included in SCI. 

The department was characterized by a comprehensive treatment of head and neck tumors where surgical treatment is in main and combined with radiotherapy, chemotherapy, biotherapy, targeted and immunotherapy. It has the only multidisciplinary outpatient clinic for head and neck tumors in the province. It routinely diagnoses and treats thyroid, oral, salivary glands, nasal paranasal sinuses, pharynx, larynx, lip and brain tumors. Individualized, precise and comprehensive sequential treatment of head and neck tumors has been carried out. It also carries out defect repair and reconstruction of larynx, hypopharynx, oropharynx, oral cavity and other malignant tumors after operation, such as all kinds of partial laryngectomy with preservation of vocal function, free jejunum transplantation for repairing hypopharyngeal and cervical esophageal defects, hyoid myofascial flaps for repairing oropharyngeal defects, free and pedicled skin flaps tongue and cheek reconstruction. It features in high-tech demanding operations such as dealing with advanced thyroid cancer (invading vessels, larynx, trachea, esophagus, mediastinum), resection of cervical root tumors, skull base surgery, surgical rescue of nasopharyngeal carcinoma after radiotherapy failure and carotid body tumor, etc. The innovatively developed cervicothoracic-combined radical operation of advanced thyroid cancer under the assisted anesthesia of cardiopulmonary bypass is unprecedented in China and has reached the international level.
